Specific Absorption Rate (SAR)

The Specific Absorption Rate is defined as the RF power absorbed per unit of mass of an object, and is usually measured in watts per kilogram (W/kg).

Australia

On 1 March 2003, all portable transmitters designed for use close to the human body, including hand-held two-way radios, laptop / tablet computers with GSM 3G / WiFi / Bluetooth 2, walkie-talkies and remote controlled toys, were required to comply with SARS limits. The regulations extended the previous arrangements, which only covered mobile phone handsets and base stations.

The mandated standard is the Radiocommunications (Electromagnetic Radiation - Human Exposure) Standard 2003 and amendment (1) 2007. All portable transmitters with integral antennas must be tested and labelled in accordance with the Radiocommunications (Compliance Labelling - Electromagnetic Radiation) Labelling Notice 2003.

New Zealand

The scope of the New Zealand regulations do not currently include human exposure to electromagnetic radiation (EMR). Instead, they are subject to guidelines.
